About Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

This is Tanzania’s most famous and largest national park. This park is also part of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Only an imaginary borderline separates the two. Huge herds of plains game occupy this vast grassland . Lion, Cheetah, Leopard are the main predators living in this area with other species of wildlife and birdlife. Serengeti’s biggest attraction is the annual Wildebeest migration. Triggered by the rains, enormous herds of Wildebeest, Zebra, Thompson’s Gazelle and numerous other species of plains game make this trek from the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya in search of new grazing land.

Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 square miles of rolling plains (Serengeti means ‘endless plains’ in the Masai language). Over 3 million animals are cohabitants of the park, making it one of the most diverse parks in Africa.

In the 1920’s professional hunters conducted safaris in this area.  In 1929, the British government established a portion of the area for a game reserve, despite the objections of ecologists and zoologists. Finally, in 1951, Serengeti National Park was established as a wildlife refuge. The Tanzanian government has continued its efforts to keep the park as a refuge despite a growing population.
