Samburu & Shaba National Reserves

About Samburu/Shaba

Samburu/Shaba National Reserves

These reserves share spectacular scenery blended with a very rich and colorful cultural heritage from the Samburu tribe. This reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including some rare  species such as the Grevy Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk Antelope, and Somali Ostrich. One can also see Crocodile basking on the banks of the Usao Nyiro River, which runs through these reserves. The Shaba national Reserve was home to the late George and Joy Adamson and the lioness ‘Elsa’ about whom Joy wrote her famous book, Born Free.

Two of the newer reserves, these were opened in 1985. They are located 343 km from Nairobi and together cover about 150 square km.
