About Mt. Kenya |
 |
This park not only offers game viewing but breathtaking scenery and exhilarating
mountain climbing of the majestic and revered Mt. Kenya, Africas second highest
mountain. This mountain is the home of Ngai (God) in the Kikuyu tribe folklore
and is treated as a holy shrine. The forest is home to a variety of animals such as the
rare Colobus Monkey, Elephant, Olive baboon, Black Rhino, Leopard, and Genet Cats to name
but a few. Mt. Kenya National Park has also made a significant mark in Kenyan history. The
Mau Mau freedom fighters used this park as a hideout against the British soldiers during
the fight for independence from the British Government in the 1950s.
Mount Kenya National Park is located 175 km from
Nairobi and covers 715 square km surrounding Mt. Kenya. The park opened in 1949.
Spectacular scenery, such as lakes, tarns, glaciers, peaks and natural mineral springs
grace the park. As visitors climb to higher altitudes, different types of habitats house
all different animals. Besides those mentioned above, the park hosts several endangered
species (Sunni Buck, Mt. Kenya Mole Shrew, Skins (lizard) and different types of Owl).
Mountain climbers and safari travelers alike will
enjoy everything about Mt. Kenya. |
