About Masai Mara |
 |
 This
popular, picturesque, and serene game reserve is where numerous species of wildlife and
birdlife, including the Big Five, cohabitate. From late June to August, the annual
migration takes place. This is truly a spectacular event. Millions of Wildebeest, Zebra
and Gazelle attempt to cross the Mara River from the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania to reach
the Masai Mara plains for greener pastures. During this time, only the toughest survive
the "jaws of death" hiding in the murky waters!!
Masai Mara Game Reserve opened in 1974 and hosts
visitors year round. Located 274km from Nairobi and spanning 1510 square kilometers, this
park is home to over 400 species of wildlife. Among the animals residing in these vast
grasslands are elephant, black rhino, zebra, wildebeest, lion, leopard and cheetah. In the
rivers you will find both crocodile and hippo.
The diverse animal life can be rivaled by the
sprawling beauty of the rolling hills and winding rivers found at Masai Mara. Some of this
can be seen in the movie "Out of Africa" which was filmed primarily on this
reserve. The northern area of the reserve is owned by the Masai, allowing the reserve to
provide you with a glimpse into traditional Masai culture. The Masai Mara Game Reserve
offers visitors culture, beauty, and adventure all year long. |
