About Amboseli |
 |
Amboseli means 'place of water' in the Masai language.
The reason for this name is due to the endless supply of water originating from Mt.
Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. Vast herds of elephant, leopard, giraffe
and plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, impala as well as other species of wildlife are
seen behind the awesome backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
One of the most popular parks in Kenya, Amboseli
is located 135 km from Nairobi and encompases 392 square km. In 1899, the British named
the area an official game reserve, but tourism didn't start to thrive until 1948. In 1974
the Kenyan government set apart the land for wildlife and tourism, creating Amboseli
National Park. Recently, the park has been named an International Biosphere due to its
rich wildlife.
Amboseli also gives tourists a spectaluar view of
Mt. Kilimanjaro, only 25 miles away. When Mt. Kilimanjaro last erupted, she sprayed
volcanic ash all over the area, covering everything in a layer of dust. So, ironically,
this 'place of water' has a very dry, dusty appearance.
Amboseli National Park's unique eco-system gives
adventurers a spectacular range of animals, birds, and plants. |
