About Aberdare Park |
 |
Aberdares National Park has a great history. It is home to the first tree
hotel in Africa. The Treetops Lodge is where, in 1952, Queen Elizabeth
II learned of her ascension to the British throne following the death of her Father, King
George VI. It is also home to the late Lord Baden-Powell, who founded the worldwide Boy
Scouts movement. On a wildlife perspective, animals are usually viewed at night from the
floodlit balconies of the tree hotels when animals come to drink from the watering holes.
Here one can see elephant, leopard and numerous varieties of plains game.
Besides the nighttime viewing, tourists can also
take advantage of the two airstrips located in the park to take a bush flight over the
fascinating terrain.
Located 180km from Nairobi and filling 767 square
km, this park ranges in altitude from 7000 to 14,000 feet above sea level and forms part
of the Aberdare Mountain Range. A wide array of landscapes (high peaks, deep valleys
intersected by rivers and streams, waterfalls, moorland, bamboo forests and rain forests),
support an amazing diversity of wildlife, birdlife and plantlife.
Aside from the elephant and leopard mentioned
above, you can also observe baboon, monkey, eland, spotted cats and black rhino. Bird
watching is also a must with over 250 species to see including Jacksons Francolin,
Sparry Hawk, Goshawk, Eagle and Sunbird.
Aberderes National Park also offers camping and
fishing for outdoor enthusiasts. |
